Harry Potter and Traditional Spiritual Values
This becomes a somewhat silly argument because there is not evidence of the Harry Potter series undermining traditional values. That is to say, while the books have become incredibly popular and sold millions of copies (to say nothing of the millions of tickets sold to the cinematic adaptations of the novels), American society has not changed. In other words, the books and the films have not set in motion a radical change in American civilization nor have they led to any conversions to witchcraft.Furthermore, the Harry Potter series are very traditional in their approach to ââ¬Ëgood and evil. ââ¬â¢ Harry Potter is not an anti-hero. He is an adolescent trying to find his place in the world while struggling with the fact that he is a warlock and this sets him apart from much of society. However, underlying Harry Potterââ¬â¢s actions are a desire to do good deeds in the world and, in the primary theme of Harry Potter and the Sorcererââ¬â¢s Stone, develop solid relationships with peers and avoid capitalizing on his warlock skills in an unfair way.Unfortunately, there will be those who will get ââ¬Ëhung upââ¬â¢ on the magic and witchcraft angle of the series, but to do so is to take life just a little too serious. It is, after all, a harmless childrenââ¬â¢s book series that contains solid moral messages and not an attempt at undermining values and indoctrinating the youth. To a great extent, many of the negative feelings towards the series will be developed by individuals who have not actually read the series or have developed a pre-existing opinion that has already drawn a negative conclusion.
Afro-Caribbean Poetry Essay
In this essay I will be studying the various items of poetry from manyAfro-Caribbean poets. One of the poets is Langston Hughes who wasà born in Joplin, Missouri on the first of February 1902. He startedà writing poetry after moving to Lincoln, Illinois. The poems I will beà studying are ââ¬Å"Mulattoâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠.à The next poet I will be looking at is Grace Nichols. Nichols was bornà in Guyana in 1950, she came to England in 1977 this is when sheà developed her fiction and verse writing. The poem I will be studying isà ââ¬Å"Praise song for my motherâ⬠. The next poet I will look at will be Dr Benjamin Obadiah lqualà Zephaniah, he was born in Birmingham, but he spent most of hisà time in Jamaica. After he spent some time in prison he decided to useà his energy for good and educate himself. The poem I will study ââ¬Å"I loveà me mudderâ⬠.à The last poet work I will be looking at will be John Agard. Agard wasà born in Guyana in 1949, the country was still a British colony untilà 1966. In 1977 Agard moved to England. This is where he became theà light of the new West Indian British dawn of various bardicà compositions. Agard is a poet whom blends calypso styled languageà with unique sounding spoken word. The work I will be studying isà ââ¬Å"Half-casteâ⬠à I have paired the poems up. The pairs either share the same topic,à tone or language. One of the pairs is ââ¬Å"Half-casteâ⬠by John Agard andà ââ¬Å"Mulattoâ⬠by Langston Hughes, because they have the same type ofà topic and also tone.à ââ¬Å"Half casteâ⬠is about weather: the term half-caste can be applied toà any thing else apart from people. John Agard has written a very goodà poem witch makes you think about the words we use every day withà out knowing the proper meanings and whether it makes any senseà when you break the word down. I think that many words we use nowà are ââ¬Å"out of dateâ⬠and should be changed for politically correct termsà and alternatives. Agard also uses some stunning references to get youà thinking. The other half of this pair ââ¬Å"Mulattoâ⬠tells us about the harshà treatment black women faced at the hands of their white bosses inà the slave era and how the women were only used as play things, thisà is shown in the part ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s a body but a toy?â⬠. The word ââ¬Å"mulattoâ⬠à means the same as ââ¬Å"half casteâ⬠but not as many people use ità nowadays. The boy in the story has a trouble fitting in with blackà people and white people and does not have that sense of belonging ifà he had been born to parents of the same race. The next pair is ââ¬Å"Praise song for my motherâ⬠by Grace Nichols and ââ¬Å"Ià love me mudderâ⬠by Benjamin Zephaniah. Iââ¬â¢ve paired these poemsà because they share the same topics which is their mothers.à ââ¬Å"Praise song for my motherâ⬠is about how Grace Nichols loved herà mother and how she inspired to do the best she could. Itââ¬â¢s also howà she looked up to her, and how her mother was all the things she likesà such as the sunrise and the fried plantain smell. The poem is set in aà past tense which seems to tell us the readers that her mother hasà died. The second half of my pair is ââ¬Å"I love me mudderâ⬠. This poem is aboutà how Benjamin Zephaniahââ¬â¢s mother came from Jamaica on a boatà called Windrush. Many people came from Jamaica because theyà thought they would have a better life than the one they all ready had.à In black family family (need to delete this) life the figure of theà mother is very strong and is the main rule maker in the house, andà this poem shows how she works so hard just to make sure her familydonââ¬â¢t go without. The last pair of poems is ââ¬Å"taintâ⬠by Grace Nichols and ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠byà Langston Hughes these two poems have been joined together becauseà they both have kind of the same topic which shows the pain blackà people have overcome but still yet we are strong.à ââ¬Å"taintâ⬠is about the treachery that this person has had cast uponà them while they where a slave, the fact that they where stolen by menà the colour of their own skin. This reminds me of the black on blackà gang warfare and killings. This person who trusted the people of theirà same skin colour was betrayed. This work also shows how theseà people where traded like they where animals. The poem has aà message to everyone: to stop fighting and live peacefully together.à The second half of the pair is ââ¬Å"I, Tooâ⬠which shows how black peopleà had to eat in a kitchen when company came but they ate well andà became strong. So when company comes no one will dare tell me toà eat in the kitchen and now you are ashamed about what you did toà me when I was mentally weak. This poem has a promise of hope forà à change. Hughes suggests that ââ¬Å"Tomorrowâ⬠things will be different andà people will see that beauty and equality of all peoples.

Preventing accidents to children Essay
One of the hazards in the nursery is wires. To minimize the risk of children tripping over wires, wires should be tidied away out of the areas where the children are to prevent them from tripping up over them. Also, cable management systems such as cord covers could be used to cover the wires which make it less likely that the children could trip over them. The Healthy Working Lives website advises to ââ¬Ëtry to place equipment to avoid cables crossing pedestrian routes and use cable guards to cover cables where requiredââ¬â¢ (Healthy Working Lives, 2013). Slips/ Trips and fall is another hazard in a nursery and to minimise it so that service users are not at risk you can make sure that such hazards are put onto a side where it is not in the way of children. For e.g. if toys are in the walkway then tidy them away to a side. The Safety and Health website says that to prevent slips trips and falls you should ââ¬Ëclean up spills immediately. If a spill canââ¬â¢t be cleaned up right away, place ââ¬Å"wet floorâ⬠warning signs for workers. Keeps walkways and hallways free of debris, clutter and obstacles. Keep filing cabinets and desk drawers shut when not in use. Cover cables or cords in walkways. Replace burnt-out light bulbs promptly. Consider installing abrasive floor mats or replacing worn flooring. Encourage workers to wear comfortable, properly fitted shoesââ¬â¢. (Safety and Health, 2016) Another hazard in a nursery Weather/ Room temperature. To minimise the risk of children professionals and other in the setting suffering from hyper/hypothermia the nursery should ensure that the setting is suitable for service users to be in. This can be done by nursery staff making sure that the setting has an appropriate temperature for e.g. if its cold outside then they should ensure that the nursery is nice and warm for the service usersââ¬â¢ and others who work or maybe visiting the nursery. If the temperature outside is too hot then The Nursery World advises to ââ¬Ëavoid physical activities on very hot days to minimise the risks of heat stress, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.ââ¬â¢ (Nursery World, 2015) Hazardous substances ââ¬â cleaning products, beach etc. is one of the major hazards in a nursery as the harms and severity are very critical. In order to minimise the risk of this hazard substances and cleaning products should be placed out of childrenââ¬â¢s reach or placed in a locked cleaning cupboard. The Health and Safety Executive website advises to ââ¬ËUse good work techniques that avoid or minimise contact with harmful substances and minimise leaks and spills. Store cleaning products safely.ââ¬â¢ (The Health and Safety Executive, No Date) In a nursery Doors/ stairs is also another hazard. In order to ensure that no service users are harmed by this hazard and the risk of potentially being harmed to be reduced the nursery should place some control measure to prevent them and they could be things such as door-slam stoppers or jammer. The Safe Kid website advises to fit hinges with protection strips ââ¬Ëthese devices cover the hinge where the door is joined to the wall. They are a long strip of plastic, easily fitted, that bend with the door when it opens, preventing children from slotting their fingers in.ââ¬â¢ (Safe Kids, 2015) Open windows can be hazardous for service users as well as other people in the setting. The risk can also be very severe for this the nursery should try to minimise the risk of children being harmed. This can be done by placing some barriers such as gates around the window so children can jump out, this can also help safeguarding as no intruders will be able to enter. The Baby Centre website advises to ââ¬Ëfit locks to prevent your child from opening them from the bottom. Fix low windows so that they donââ¬â¢t open more than 12.5cm.ââ¬â¢ (Baby Centre, 2017) Faulty electrical equipmentââ¬â¢s are another hazard in a nursery. This hazards has an overall rating of 12 but it can severely affect service users, professionals and others in the setting. In order to minimise this risk all electrical equipmentââ¬â¢s should be regularly tested, any electricââ¬â¢s that are broken or can be hazardous to people should be disposed of or put out of use. This is supported by The Nursery World website that says ââ¬ËAll electrical and gas equipment to be maintained and subject to annual inspections. The service histories of appliances should be recorded in a log book.ââ¬â¢ (Nursery World, 2017) Medication or drugs lying around in the nursery is another hazard. To minimise professionals should keep an eye on service users to ensure that they donââ¬â¢t do anything that could place them in harm. This can be done by professionals making sure that the setting is safe for the children. Any medication that are in the premises should be authorised by the nursery nurse or it should be a prescribed by doctors. These medication should be kept by professionals and given to service users as prescribed. The Kids Health website advises to ââ¬ËStore all medicines, prescription and non-prescription, out of sight and out of reach of children, preferably in a locked cabinet. Even items that seem harmless, such as mouthwash, can be extremely dangerous if ingested in large quantities by children. Just because cabinets are up high doesnââ¬â¢t mean kids canââ¬â¢t get their hands on whatââ¬â¢s in them, theyââ¬â¢ll climb up (using the toilet and countertops) to get to items in the medicine cabinet.ââ¬â¢ (The kids Health, 2017) Climbing frames/ broken toys can also be hazard in a nursery as service users can be harmed during playtime or when doing activities. To minimise this risk the nursery should make sure that all their equipmentââ¬â¢s have a risk assessment done, make sure that the toys in the nursery arenââ¬â¢t harmful to the children, broken toys can be a hazard as service users may fall of them and gets hurt or it may drop on them depending on what toy it is. When children are playing on the climbing frames a professional should keep an eye on them or help them on this activity as they may fall from it and get injured. Toys with sharp edges should be avoided and the nursery should have age-appropriate toys. The safe Kids website says that ââ¬ËUseful points to consider include what to look for when buying toys, understanding safety marks and labelling, ensure that the right safety checks have been carried out, and considerations when giving and receiving used toys.ââ¬â¢ (Safe Kids, 2011) Another potential hazard in a nursery is the event of a fire. If the nursery have control measures in place then the likelihood of a fire can be reduced. Control measure could be equipmentââ¬â¢s that may cause a fire being checked and tested regularly, cookers and gas check should also be up to date and recorded on a logbook. The Kids Health website supports this by saying that making sure all electrical appliances are tested, making sure that wires are in good condition and sockets are safe to use. Fire alarms, fire doors etc. should be installed in the case of a fire and the Safety website says that the three Pââ¬â¢s are recommended, they are: â⬠¢ ââ¬ËPREPARE ââ¬â Reduce the risk of fires by eliminating hazards. â⬠¢ PRACTICE ââ¬â Practice a fire evacuation plan and general fire safety practices. â⬠¢ PREVENT ââ¬â The Unthinkableââ¬â¢

Act and Rule Utilitarianism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Act and Rule Utilitarianism - Essay Example Act utilitarianism focuses on the specific act that will bring that good in the end. However, according to the rule utilitarian, this is improbable or even impossible. This begs the question: How does one determine if an act will produce a specific good This is where rule utilitarianism comes into the picture. One first determines what are the rules that if generally followed will produce the best results. The rule utilitarian does not focus on finding the specific act that will produce the best results since any act in accordance to that rule will produce a good. Thus, rule utilitarianism is more acceptable. An act in accordance with rule utilitarianism may or may not appeal to the act utilitarian, but this is better than trying in vain to find out what is that specific act the act utilitarian will accept.Whichever form one may choose, both cannot escape the criticisms against utilitarianism that one may lie, steal, or kill just to enact that which is good. In other words, the end ju stifies the means.

Gratuities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Gratuities - Essay Example In the instant case, as the Chief of Police, it becomes my primary responsibility to uphold the above principles and set an example to my colleagues and subordinates. However, the owner of the restaurant has been operating in the city for the past 15 years and the free meals he offers to the police officers is a token of his appreciation for the efficient services they render and not a favor that the officers extract. In addition, he is also a personal friend of the mayor, my boss. Thus, it appears that the restaurant owner has been offering gratuities to the officers with the tacit knowledge of the mayor. Under the present circumstances, where police corruption has become a threat to nations across the globe, as a responsible officer, I cannot tolerate the acceptance of gratuities in any form, especially when the criminal justice system is planning and implementing various policies for the prevention of corruption. Therefore, I will very politely refuse the offer of the restaurant o wner. In addition, I will also request him to not extend any such favor anymore to the officers of my department. I will also explain the situation to the mayor and apprise him of the policies that our department have on such issues. On the other hand, I understand that my decision may hurt the bona fide intention of this man and, hence, I will agree to accept some contribution from him for any facility or utility for the public visiting the police stations for any service such as building a rest room. However, prior to committing anything, I will discuss the issue in detail with my boss, the mayor. Thus, a liberal citizenââ¬â¢s contribution to the services we offer will ultimately revert to the benefit of the other citizens in the community. Question 2: The National Incident Management System (NIMS) provides the ââ¬Å"national frameworkâ⬠for managing and supporting operations during any emergency, based on standardized incident management strategies (Emergency Operations Plan, 2013, p.8). The Incident Command System (ICS) is a standard command and control system as stipulated by NIMS for the ââ¬Å"response at the scene of incidentâ⬠(Local and Tribal NIMS Integration, n.d., p.8). Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), on the other hand, is a guide that contains the relevant guidelines to be followed ââ¬Å"before, during, and afterâ⬠an incident or emergency (Emergency Operations Plan, 2013, p.5). The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) serves as the ââ¬Å"focal pointâ⬠for managing information, making decision and providing support as well as ââ¬Å"resource distributionâ⬠during emergencies (p.5). Thus, it transpires that the NIMS, ICS, EOP and EOC are the major components for the management of various operations during an emergency. NIMS prescribe the uniform standard and all the other components that work together during any major incident. While EOP is the set of policies to be formulated locally to counter any emergency, these wi ll be based on the standards that NIMS prescribes, the EOC and ICS execute the policies and procedures that the NIMS stipulate. Therefore, it can be construed that the activities of all these components are interrelated and mutually complementary to one another. These

Wireless technology and its impact on computer networking Essay
Wireless technology and its impact on computer networking - Essay Example Three quarters of a century later, civilization witnessed the birth of a new era, one which was largely ahead of its predecessor in terms of technological advancements. This new era as we all know it is the age of information technology. One need not go into the depth and the history of this achievement but move on towards a more current realization, the accomplishment which is more conveniently termed as an industry due to its sheer magnitude and relative importance. According to Kaveh Pahalavan and Prashan Krishnamurthy, "it owns the largest market share, and it has enabled us to change our lifestyles by entering the information technology age. This industry is the telecommunication networking industry"."Wireless networking has exploded in popularity in the last few years. From the way we communicate with friends and family to the way we conduct our daily business, and even the way we listen to music, wireless networking is quickly changing the face of technology" (Magoo). The impa ct of wireless networking or WiFi (wireless fidelity) on the existing computer networking has been rather drastic. And the number of benefactors are countless, educational and business institutions are just a few to name. It is the birth of a new dynasty, the new generation of telecommunications. The WiFi system provides support to countless devices for connection, may it be laptops, cell phones, PDAs etc. Wi-Fi or Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is based on the IEEE 802.11 specifications. "IEEE 802.11, the Wi-Fi standard, denotes a set of Wireless LAN/WLAN standards developed by working group 11 of the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802)" (Wikipedia). A typical Wi-Fi setup involves setting up access points which as the term suggests are geographical areas where internet can be access via a router. A wireless network is a very complex structure and has evolved over the past decade. Some light needs to be shed on the entire architecture of a wireless network. In that respect, an important reference point is the OSI model. "The OSI, or Open System Interconnection, model defines a networking framework for implementing protocols in seven layers" (Webopedia). The seven layers are defined as Application (Layer 7), Presentation (Layer 6), Session (Layer 5), Transport (Layer 4), Network (Layer 3), Data Link (layer 2), and Physical (Layer 1). In the OSI model, control is passed on from the top layers to the bottom, one-by-one and back up. For example, an information exchange between two users will go in such way that 'user 1' will send data from one terminal. The data will transmit via all the layers starting from the application layer down to the physical layer. There will be a physical link between the physical layers of both users. The data will be transmitted to the physical layer o f 'user 2' via a physical link. Once there, it will be passed on the hierarchy up to the application layer where it will be received by the user. One common misconception has to be clarified that the user is not a part of the OSI model. "The OSI serves as a reference model for all network protocols because its functionality exists in all communications systems, although two or three OSI layers may be incorporated into one" (TechWeb). The OSI model is an important aspect in the entire architecture on which serves as the basis of networking. All network communication taking place between two devices is based on all or some layers (TCP/IP) of the OSI Model. Using this definition on the original topic, it can be deduced that OSI model is a networking standard and wireless networking is a part of it. When it comes to wireless networking, the OSI model alone is not responsible for data transmission. It requires support

Web Server Hacking Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Web Server Hacking - Research Paper Example To add to the attraction and profitability of these hacking attacks is the proliferation of insecure web applications (Zachary, 2006). These attacks on computer systems with negative intent are not new. They go as far back as the eighties when hackers used their skills to break into computer systems and perform their illegal activities. The advent of web based applications, though, has led to the increase of sophistication in hacking attacks. The skill required to perform these attacks, on the other hand has lessened proportionately. In order to understand the need for security in oneââ¬â¢s computer system, he or she should realize the risks involved. Most operating systems have a default configuration that is not designed with security as the chief focus. The default setup, instead, focus on functionality, communications and usability. There is therefore a need to understand the server vulnerabilities in a system in order to perform particular functions to improve security (Leyde n, 2002). It is hence clear that web server hacking is an important topic that should be evaluated in detail and understood by users of computer systems. When one tries to break into or use a computer system wrongly, he or she is considered an intruder. ââ¬ËUsing wronglyââ¬â¢ is not a restricted term and can be used to represent an act of stealing confidential information or a minor offense of just misusing oneââ¬â¢s email for spam (Zachary, 2006). Presently, more people both through the internet and corporate intranets are continuously attempting to test the various systemsââ¬â¢ security. The motive differs in every instance but revenge and stealing for profit are some of the motives driving intruders. ââ¬ËHackerââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëattackerââ¬â¢ are the two terms that are used in describing a person who tries to get into networks and systems. An individual that likes to get into their computer system
